What is Bridge Resource Management?

Bridge Resource Management is training for ship captains and navigational officers that teaches them how to manage the ship’s bridge efficiently. The main goal is to ensure safe and effective ship operations. BRM focuses on improving teamwork, communication, and decision-making to prevent mistakes and accidents.

What are the key elements of effective Bridge Resource Management?

BRM helps avoid accidents by making better use of all available resources.

  • Clear Communication: It’s important for all team members to understand what’s happening and know their tasks. Good communication helps avoid mistakes.
  • Teamwork: BRM teaches how to work together effectively to manage the ship better.
  • Situational Awareness: Officers need to constantly be aware of what’s happening around the ship: its position, weather conditions, other ships, and any dangers.
  • Decision-Making: Learning to make quick and correct decisions in difficult situations is a key part of BRM.
  • Leadership: Leadership skills help guide the team and ensure everyone works together for safe navigation.
Bridge Resource Management is a training program for ship's Masters and navigational officers.
On completion of the course the learner/trainee should be able to demonstrate sufficient understanding and knowledge of bridge resource management and leadership and teamworking and have the relevant skills to competently carry out the duties of officer in charge of a navigational watch. The program meets the latest requirements of STCW Convention and IMO Model Course 1.22 "Bridge Resource Management".
The course is approved by Latvian Maritime Administration.
The Bridge Team and Resource Management training course covers the following topics:
  • Practical planning and carrying out a voyage;
  • Bridge team duties, responsibilities, teamwork;
  • Communications;
  • Challenge and response;
  • Use of authority and assertiveness;
  • The Bridge Team and Pilot;
  • Leadership and Managerial skills;
  • Involvement of human in error chain;
  • Working knowledge of shipboard personnel management and training;
  • Need for international maritime conventions, recommendations and national legislation;
  • Ability to apply task and workload management;
  • Knowledge and ability to apply effective resource management;
  • Knowledge and ability to apply decision-making techniques;
  • Self-awareness, personal and professional development.;

Trainees wishing to enter this course should have:
  • Certificate of Competence as officer in charge of a navigational watch and should present appropriate diploma/certificate; or
  • Evidence that is in progress studying on th educational program of Officer in Chargeof an Navigational Watch.
During training course theoretical lessons are given using PowerPoint presentations, practical tasks are conducted on the latest version of Transas bridge simulation equipment – NT-PRO 5000.
