What is the Polar Code and why is it important for polar navigation?

The Polar Code is a set of rules for ships that travel in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. It was created to keep ships and their crews safe and to protect the delicate environment in these cold areas. The Polar Code includes important guidelines for how ships should be designed, how crews should be trained, and what to do in emergencies.

  • Safety: The Polar Code helps ensure that crews are ready for the tough conditions in polar waters, like freezing temperatures and ice.
  • Environmental Protection: It also helps prevent pollution and protects the unique wildlife in polar regions.
The Polar Code Basic Training Certificate is proof that a crew member understands how to operate a ship safely in icy waters. This certificate is needed by ship captains, Chief Officers, and mates who work in polar areas.

Captains, Chief Officers, and mates who will be navigating in polar waters must have this certificate.
The training includes topics like different types of ice, how ships work in cold conditions, safe navigation in ice, working with ice-breakers, and emergency responses.
