Basic Safety Training

Description of the course
Target group
The Basic Safety Training (BST) course is designed for new and experienced seafarers who are required to demonstrate competence in essential safety skills as per the STCW Convention. This includes:
1. New Entrants: Individuals who are entering the maritime industry for the first time and need to obtain the basic safety certification required to work on board ships.
2. Experienced Seafarers: Mariners who need to revalidate their existing BST certificate due to expiration or regulatory changes.
3. Other Maritime Personnel: Shore-based maritime professionals and those working on vessels of various sizes and types, including commercial, cruise, and offshore vessels.
Objectives of the course
In this course the participants should gain the knowledge and skills of:
  • Survival at sea in case ship abandonment;
  • Fire-fighting techniques;
  • Elementary first aid;
  • Social responsibilities;
  • Pollution prevention.
Duration of the training course
The duration of the Basic Safety training course is 5 working days.
Price
The price is 550 EUR.
Certificate validity
Certificate is valid 5 years.
Course contents
The Training course covers the following topics:
  • Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques;
  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting;
  • Elementary First Aid;
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.
Income requirements
1. Minimum Age:
  • Participants must typically be at least 18 years old.
2. Medical Fitness:
  • Participants must have a valid medical certificate demonstrating fitness for duty at sea. This is to ensure they can perform the physical tasks required during training and actual emergency situations.
3. Sea Service Requirements:
  • For initial BST courses, there is no sea service requirement. This course is often taken by individuals who are new to the maritime industry and have not yet accrued any sea time.
4. Documents:
  • Valid identity document (passport/ID card).

Approval
The course is complies all requirements of Sections A-VI/1-1; A-VI/1-2; A-VI/1-3; A-VI/1-4 of SCTW Code, as well as covers all subject areas recommended by IMO Model Courses 1.19 “Proficiency in Personal Survival Techiques”, 1.20 „Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting”, 1.13 „Elementary First Aid”and1.21 „Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities”.




The course is certified by Latvian Maritime Administration.
Training approaches and equipment:
During training course theoretical lessons are given using PowerPoint presentations, practical tasks are conducted using different equipment: swimming pool, lifeboat, launching davits, rescue boat, fast rescue boats, life rafts, different fire-fighting equipment and fire-fighting simulator.
