Description of the course
Target group
GWO BST Sea Survival module is primarily intended for personnel working in the wind industry or related fields needing to obtain their GWO BST Sea Survival Module certificates.
Objectives of the course
On completion of the BST Sea Survival Module the delegates will be able:
  • To demonstrate knowledge of dangers and symptoms related to hypothermia and drowning;
  • Understanding of the advantages and limitations of the different Life Saving Appliances (LSA), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Personal Fall Protective Equipment (PFPE) commonly used in the offshore wind energy industry and are able to wear and use them accordingly;
  • Knowledge of risks related to transfers (dynamic/static – static/dynamic);
  • Safe transfer from vessel to dock and vessel to foundation;
  • Knowledge of the emergency and safety procedures on installations, vessels and WTG;
  • Knowledge of Search and Rescue (SAR) and Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS);
  • Recovery and First Aid treatment of a “man over board”; evacuation from a mock WTG to the water by means of rescue device;
  • Individual and collective survival techniques at sea.

Training approaches and equipment:
During training course theoretical lessons are given using PowerPoint presentations and mock-up of various survival equipment, practical tasks are based on real scenarios and conducted using following equipment:
  • building for smoke and fire drills,
  • breathing apparatus,
  • fire trays, hydrants,
  • hoses nozzles,
  • different type of portable extinguishers,
  • firefighting outfits,
  • swimming pool or river with life rafts,
  • immersion suits,
  • lifejackets,
  • rescue boats,
  • etc.
Duration of the training course
  • 6.5 h - Course fully at training centre
  • 5 h - Digital Delivery (e-learning + practice at training centre)

250 EUR per person.
Certificate validity
Certificate is valid 2 years.
Course contents
The Sea Survival training course covers the following topics:
  • Legislation;
  • Exposure, Cold Shock, Hypothermia and Drowning;
  • Life Saving Appliances and PPE;
  • Safe transfer;
  • Installations, vessels and Wind Turbine Generators;
  • Man Over Board;
  • SAR and GMDSS;
  • Practical sea survival and transfer;
  • Evaluation.
Course limitations:
The maximum number of participants – 12 persons for theoretical and 4 persons for practical exercises.
Entry standards
  • Trainees wishing to enter this course should be medically fit and capable of fully participating.
  • Participation in a course according to the GWO standards requires a special identification number for each participant. Each person must have this so-called “WINDA identification number (WINDA-ID)”.
