Target group Personnel who will be working in the wind industry or related fields and will have their duties in a wind turbine environment, usually in physical contact with a wind turbine or an offshore wind structure. Personnel that perform job functions that has been risk assessed by their employer or their workplace duty holder as a function, where training according to one or more modules of the BST standard may mitigate of the identified risks.
Objectives of the course The aim of this training is to enable the participants to prevent fires, make appropriate judgements when evaluating a fire, manage evacuation of personnel and ensure all are safely accounted for in the event of an unmanageable fire. If the incident is judged to be safe, the participants should be able to efficiently extinguish an initial fire by using basic handheld firefighting equipment.
After having successfully completed Fire Awareness Initial Training, the participants will have the ability to:
Act independently to identify fire hazards and prevent fires in a wind turbine environment (Ability, intermediate level);
Take responsibility for assessing a fire and, if needed, be able to select the right extinguishing media according to the fire classes (Ability, intermediate level);
Take responsibility for the evacuation of personnel and ensure all are safely accounted for in the event of an unmanageable fire (Ability, intermediate level);
Act independently in efficiently extinguishing an initial fire by using basic handheld firefighting equipment, if the incident is judged to be safe (Ability, intermediate level).

Theoretical tasks with presentations and visualizations;
Group workshops;

Professional instructors with industry experience.
Any equipment used during this GWO training module shall meet or exceed the minimum requirements of the national standards in the country where the training is taking place. When working in a country where there is no applicable national standard then the equipment shall meet or exceed the minimum requirements of the European standards.
Duration of the training course
4 hours - Course fully at training centre
1.5 hours - Digital Delivery (e-learning + practice at training centre)
Price 110 EUR per person.
Certificate validity Certificate is valid 2 years.
Course contents Lesson 1 - Introduction to training; Lesson 2 - Legislation; Lesson 3 - Fire combustion and Fire spread; Lesson 4 - Fire extinction; Lesson 5 - Fire Prevention; Lesson 6 - Firefighting equipment in a WTG; Lesson 7 - Practice and scenario-based training; Lesson 8 - Training review.
Course limitations: The maximum number of participants is 12 persons for one instructor for theoretical and 6 persons for instructor for practical exercises.
All personnel participating in refresher training shall be medically fit and capable of fully participating.
Participation in a course according to the GWO standards requires a special identification number for each participant. Each person must have this so-called “WINDA identification number (WINDA-ID)”.
