Shipboard Safety Officer Training Course

(Including Risk Assessment and Incident Investigation)

Description of the course
Target group
The course is intended for:
Seafarers who are about to, or are already, serving as either safety representatives or shipboard safety officers.
The Shipboard Safety Officer course has been designed with a view of training the designated safety officer in understanding the importance of running a safer and cleaner ship thus spreading safety awareness amongst fellow seafarers.
Objectives of the course
A trainee successfully completing the course will be able to:
  • Have the knowledge of the general dangers involved in shipboard operations;
  • Understand the role of a safety officer;
  • Understand the importance of identifying general hazards and spreading safety awareness;
  • Carry out Risk assessment;
  • Carry out accident investigations and root cause analysis;
  • Handle stress and fatigue and understand its implications to accidents;
  • Understand the importance of reporting near misses and accidents;
  • Handle internal and external safety audits.
Course contents
The Training course covers the following topics:
  • Brief introduction to ISM Code;
  • Introduction to Health and Safety legislations;
  • Responsibilities and duties of the Shipboard Safety Officer;
  • Risk management and Risk assessment;
  • Shipboard Safety Committee. Roles of Safety Committee members. Safety meetings;
  • Undergoing Audits;
  • Safety Management System (SMS). Record keeping;
  • Human factor. Safe work practices;
  • Accident / Incident theory. Accident / Incident investigation. Root cause analysis;
  • Reporting accidents, incidents, near misses. Maintaining an Accident prevention Log;
  • Creating a Safety Culture through teamwork;
  • Handling Stress and Fatigue and its impact on safety;
  • Case Studies and lessons learnt;
  • Assessment and Discussion.
Duration of the training course
The duration of the Shipboard Safety Officer training course is 2 working days (13 hours).
Training course can be delivered on site (Shore Based Training), distantly (Online Training using webinars)
or it could be combined.

The price is 220 EUR.
Certificate validity
Unlimited.
Income requirements
To be assigned on the training course, participant should present:
  • National passport;
  • Seamen’s book.

Training approaches and equipment:
During training course theoretical lessons are given using PowerPoint presentations, for practical exercises participants can be placed into groups of two or four people.
Course limitations:
The maximum number of participants - 8 persons for online training and 16 persons for shore based training.

  • Shipboard Safety Committee. Safety meetings
– Conducting Safety Meetings and spreading safety
  • Undergoing Audits:
– Problem areas on board ships
– Internal Audit. External Audit
– Areas of particular interest
– DPA involvement
  • SMS record keeping:
– Shipboard SMS
– Procedures required before work commences
– Permit to work system

DAY 2
  • Human factor. Safe work practices;
  • Accident / Incident prevention and investigation:
– Accident theory, accident investigation and accident statistics
  • Accident / Incident reporting:
– Reporting near-misses and accidents
– Maintaining an Accident prevention log
  • Creating a Safety Culture through teamwork;
  • Handling Stress and Fatigue and its impact on safety;
  • Case Studies and lessons learnt;
  • Assessment and Discussion.
