Description of the course
Target group
The DPVM Revalidation Course is designed for personnel who already hold a DPVM certificate issued by The Nautical Institute and wish to refresh and update their knowledge, or who need to revalidate their certification. This is specifically applicable to DPVMs who have accumulated less than 150 DP sea time days within the validity period of their certificate, or those who have 150 days but elect to complete the Revalidation Course instead of the continuing professional development (CPD) programme and online exam.
Objectives of the course
The course aims to provide an understanding of the theoretical and practical operation of DP systems, including a technical understanding of component parts, the limitations of equipment, and the effects of equipment failures. Trainees will develop the ability to find faults in the DP system, understand Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and system redundancy, and safely operate the engine room and DP equipment. It also covers an understanding of MTS vessel design philosophy and the effects of cross-connections.
Duration of the training course
The duration of the course is 34 hours spread across 5 working days, which includes theory instructions, practical exercises, a practical exam, and an online exam.

The price is 1900 EUR.
Certificate validity
The DPVM Revalidation Course completion is valid for a period of 12 months only, during which the candidate must apply online to The Nautical Institute for their certificate revalidation. Upon successful revalidation, the DPVM certificate is issued with an expiry date five years after the previous certificate's expiry date.
Course contentsThe DPVM Revalidation course covers the following topics:- General overview of DP;
- The power system and the thruster system;
- Control systems and sensors;
- Documentation;
- DP operation and effects on the DP system;
- Safe DP operation of CAM, ASOG, TAM and TAGOS;
- Lessons learned;
- Manning, training, and competency assessment;
- Simulator exercises demonstrating fault finding, such as command signal problems, thruster failures, and sensor rejects.
Income requirementsTo enroll in the course, applicants must fulfill the following:- A DPVM certificate issued by The Nautical Institute (the original certificate must be presented at the training center).
- If completing the course for the first time, there is no minimum DP sea time requirement.
- If completing the course for a second or subsequent time, a minimum of 28 DP sea time days (gained within the validity period of the certificate) is required to revalidate.
Course limitations:
The maximum number of participants – 4 persons.
