The OPITO BOSIET with EBS (Code 5700) is a 3-day offshore safety course combining safety induction, BOSIET and HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training), sea survival and firefighting into one internationally recognised certification.

Target groupThis training programme BOSIET (with EBS) (OPITO code 5700) is designed to meet the initial offshore safety and emergency response training requirements for personnel new (or returning) to the offshore oil and gas industry who will be supplied with a rebreather emergency breathing system (EBS) during offshore helicopter travel. -
Learning objectivesThe aim of the BOSIET (with EBS) is to introduce delegates to the specific safety issues and regimes relevant to offshore installations, and to equip them with the basic emergency response knowledge and skills for travelling to and from offshore installations by helicopter.
The objectives of the BOSIET (with EBS) Training are that delegates will be able to:- Identify the generic hazards which are specific to offshore oil and gas installations, potential risks associated with those hazards, and how controls are put in place to eliminate or reduce risks.
- Identify key offshore related safety regulations and explain the basic safety management concepts
- Demonstrate, in a simulated environment, that they can use the safety equipment, and follow procedures in preparing for, and during helicopter emergencies – with particular focus on escaping from a helicopter following ditching
- Demonstrate sea survival and first aid techniques
- Demonstrate that they can effectively use basic firefighting equipment, and practise self-rescue techniques in low visibility situations, to include smoke filled areas.

Training approaches and equipment1. Theoretical tasks with presentations and visualizations
2. Practical exercises using real life equipment and/or simulators:- Dry evacuation into an aviation liferaft on water from a helicopter trainer.
- Escape from a partially submerged helicopter trainer through an exit which is under water and use of emergency breathing system equipment.
- Escape from a capsized helicopter trainer and use of a lifejacket.
- Evacuate from a helicopter trainer following an emergency dry landing.
- Operation of emergency exits and push-out windows of a type currently found on helicopters operating offshore.
- Donning of an aviation transit suit, aviation lifejacket and emergency breathing system equipment.
- Operation of an aviation liferaft.
- Operation and use of emergency breathing system during pool exercises.
- Deployment of emergency breathing system equipment during helicopter evacuation and escape training.
- The donning of a permanent buoyancy life jacket.
- The use of a helicopter lifting device and winching to a simulated rescue aircraft.
- The boarding of a marine life raft from the water
- In-water procedures, including individual and group survival technique, followed by rescue by one of the recognised methods available offshore.
- Mustering, boarding and strapping in as a TEMPSC passenger (the craft then to be lowered into water to float and be released).
- The use of portable fire extinguishers on a range of fires of surface area 0.1 m2 to 1.0 m2 against the following:
– Class B contained spill- The donning and wearing of a smoke hood in an area which can be smoke logged using cosmetic smoke.
- Dedicated concreted area with adequate drainage to allow the delivery of all firefighting exercises for 16 delegates, instructors and support staff.

BOSIET with EBS (OPITO Code 5700) stands for Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training with Emergency Breathing System. It is a mandatory 3-day OPITO-certified course for all personnel new to the offshore oil and gas industry who travel to offshore installations by helicopter. The EBS version is specifically for those supplied with a rebreather device during helicopter travel. The course covers offshore safety induction, helicopter underwater escape (HUET), sea survival, firefighting and self-rescue. The certificate is valid for 4 years and is recognised by all major offshore operators worldwide.
The BOSIET with EBS course (OPITO Code 5700) at Novikontas Energy in Riga, Latvia costs 1,400 EUR per person. The price includes meals during all 3 training days. The OPITO certificate is issued upon successful completion at no additional cost. Corporate group rates and invoicing are available for companies booking multiple participants.
A BOSIET certificate is valid for 4 years from the date of completion. Before it expires, you must complete FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training, OPITO Code 5702) — a 1-day refresher that extends your certification for a further 4 years. If your BOSIET or FOET certificate expires, you must repeat the full 3-day BOSIET course from the beginning.
BOSIET training is physically and mentally challenging but is designed to be achievable for people with reasonable health and fitness. The most demanding element is typically the helicopter underwater escape training (HUET) — participants are submerged and inverted in a helicopter simulator while using the EBS device to breathe and escape. No prior offshore experience is required. Our instructors prepare you thoroughly with dry practice before any pool exercises.
Yes. HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training) is a core module included in every BOSIET course. The HUET module covers helicopter travel safety, emergency procedures, underwater escape techniques, and the practical use of the EBS during escape from a submerged and inverted helicopter simulator. HUET alone does not replace a full BOSIET course.
The standard BOSIET with EBS (Code 5700) cannot be done fully online — it includes mandatory pool-based and practical exercises (helicopter escape, sea survival, firefighting) that must be completed in person. However, OPITO also offers a Digital Delivery BOSIET (Code 5703) which allows theoretical modules to be completed remotely before attending practical sessions. Novikontas Energy offers both variants.
To attend BOSIET with EBS at Novikontas Energy you must: be at least 16 years old; be in reasonable physical health (pool exercises and physical activities are involved); complete a medical self-declaration form before the course - provided by Novikontas. No prior offshore experience is needed - BOSIET is an entry-level certification. Note: for work on UK offshore installations, employers typically also require an ENG1 medical certificate.
BOSIET is renewed by completing FOET — Further Offshore Emergency Training (OPITO Code 5702). FOET is a 1-day course that refreshes helicopter underwater escape, sea survival and firefighting skills, and extends your certificate for a further 4 years. FOET must be completed before your BOSIET or previous FOET expires. If it expires, the full 3-day BOSIET must be repeated.
No — HUET is one module within BOSIET. BOSIET is the full 3-day offshore safety certification covering: safety induction, helicopter escape (HUET), sea survival, firefighting and self-rescue. HUET specifically covers escaping from a submerged helicopter using the EBS or CA-EBS device. You cannot replace a full BOSIET with HUET alone.
